Common Sense’s research around teen-parent relationships is a bit eye opening. The findings detail how teens and their parents are not close or connected. This disconnect can largely be attributed to the influence of the internet and social media. In today’s world teens and others mostly look to social media or their online friendships to share and talk about different things and the parents of this generation did not grow up that way nor do they understand why it is that way.

Social Media brings positives and negatives. Some positives that teens say social media has is the ability to always be connected to their peers and the ability to have 24/7 access to information. Parents see social media in a positive light when they are able to connect with old friends and keep up to date with family and friends.

Some negatives of social media can include the way social media affects people’s mental health and depression levels. It is well documented that social media directly affects the mental health of people if they do not use the platforms responsibly.
